Cane Seats

Although the process is laborious it usually takes around 10-12 hours to weave a seat for a typical chair but the result is both sturdy and elegant. The cane is anchored to the frame. Cane is usually sold in bundles called hanks. Various widths of cane are available to suit the diameter of the holes in the frame. Chair caning traces its origins to medieval China. It was introduced in America in the second half of the seventeenth century and has experienced a revival since the 1940s. We have restored lots of furniture from this period. We have been re- caning and rush seating chairs and sofas now for 25 years. We use only the best materials available from Indonesia. All patterns can be replicated and reproduced. Professionally woven cane is uniform and tightly fitted, it is of a light colour at the beginning and with time will darken with age. Staining cane is not recommended.
